'In Her Words' is a sub-series
from Something Private — a space for women to share deeply personal
stories of unspeakable pains and triumph, faith and strength. In
this third episode, we hear from a Malay-Muslim female* who has
undergone female circumcision, or sunat perempuan, in Singapore. She shares that growing up,
sunat was very much a norm for her community and was not a
practice she questioned until exposed to liberal schools of
thought. What is the type of circumcision practiced back home? Is
it the same as those in African states? Are there any health
benefits, and how does it affect one’s sex life?
